Succession planting is the practice of planting a crop multiple times over a few weeks during the growing season. This allows you to get the most out of your harvest because as one crop finishes another is already taking its place.
🥦Start in the early spring with your cool weather crops such as lettuce, spinach, radishes, and peas. These can be planted every week in spring and have a short maturing time allowing multiple harvests before the summer gets too hot. Once the weather is too hot for these crops, remove them and replace them with warm weather crops. By doing this you will never have an empty space in your garden, therefore giving you the highest yields possible.
🥦Potatoes, broccoli, beets, carrots, beans and summer squash can also be planted multiple times through the season. For example, plant an early variety of potatoes and harvest them as young potatoes. Once that crop is out of the ground immediately amend the soil and plant another crop of potatoes for a later fall harvest.
🥦When sowing crops a little later in the season and temperatures are warmer it is best to try and plant just before rain, water consistently and mulch. Shade cloth may also be helpful for new seedlings in hot weather.
